Feature Band: The Barrelhouse Wailers

The Barrelhouse Wailers serve up their own take on Prohibition Era hot jazz and blues music of the 1920’s and 1930’s. They perform on only acoustic instruments to retain the authentic sound of that period. The Wailers bring their passion and energy to the style, making it as fresh today as it was when it was the newest, hottest dance music 100 years ago! This eclectic crew really entertains with a whole lot of jazz, a pinch of blues, and a bayou full of New Orleans swagger. They have been influenced by a cocktail of artists, past and present, like Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Tuba Skinny, Sydney Bechet, Billie Holiday as well as Traditional New Orleans Jazz, Classic Blues, Country Blues and Big Band sounds. Their 2019 CD release, “Day In, Day Out”, features 7 original compositions and a 1919 cover in the public domain and is available for digital download on Bandcamp.com.  The band began performing shows in January, 2013, and has been playing steadily around Ventura and Los Angeles since then.
The Barrelhouse Wailers are:
Karen Parkhouse - Vocals/Percussion
Todd Temanson - Banjo
Diamono Andreo - Drums/Washboard
David Leoncavallo - Bass
Jim Wade – Tuba
Andrew Chermak - Trumpet
“Skabone” Stan Middleton – Trombone/Vocals

Opening Act: The Decomposing Brass Quintet.

The Decomposing Brass Quintet.  Who are we? The Decomposing Brass Quintet is comprised of brass players from the Friendly Neighborhood Big Band, with an occasional guest performer as a substitute. The formation of the group was the brain child of Mitch Latting, David Johns, and Danny Beher. We have been providing audiences with performances of great jazz standards, pop, Broadway, and movie themes. We have access to over 500 songs of various composers and arrangers. The band rehearses weekly, even during the pandemic while observing social distancing. Each time we get together for our “rehearsals,” we do a lot of sight reading of new music. Sight reading is the practice of reading and performing music that we have not seen or played before. The band members have years of experience playing with various groups and are delighted to be affiliated with the DBQ. Some of the groups are: The Friendly Neighborhood Big Band, Starlight Dreamband, Central City Swing, Central Coast Brass, Estero Brass, Trumpet Alliance of Cuesta College, Royal Garden Swing Orchestra of Cuesta College. Our members, with these groups, have performed at/for: Dana Adobe & Cultural Center, Salvation Army, Branch Street Deli, Arroyo Grande Centennial Celebration, Clark Center Holiday SingAlong, Grand opening of the SLO Train Museum, Rotary Band Stand in Arroyo Grande, Madonna Inn, Filipponi Winery, Nipomo Presbyterian Church, and much, much more.
