Golden Age Argentine Tango - Come take a look through a world-changing window in musical history!

The Charles Gorczynski Tango Quartet comes to San Luis Obispo for the first time to perform this dance music in the traditional style, with a special instrument called the bandoneon. Joining Charles is GRAMMY-nominated Sascha Jacobsen on bass, pianist and composer Elyse Weakley and Central Coast violinist, Keiko Cadby.

Minneapolis-based composer and bandoneonist Charles Gorczynski works in contemporary tango, new music, and studio production. He leads the acclaimed modern tango outfit Redwood Tango Ensemble as well as Charles Gorczynski Tango Quartet, Twin Cities Tango Collective, and his studio project IVYASA.

“A force in modern sound design…” - Jazz Times

Charles is an established musician and community organizer with a distinct voice in creative new music, stemming from his upbringing in jazz/improvised music and his extensive work in tango composition and performance. His projects Redwood Tango Ensemble and Colorlist have toured extensively in North America and Europe, working 100+ performances annually and releasing ten albums of original compositions. Charles has premiered compositions with Chamber Music Northwest Festival and Intermusic SF, where he was twice awarded the MGP grant commissioning new work for tango chamber ensemble. He has collaborated, recorded, and toured with many international tango projects, including Mariano Barreiro Tango Trio, Tango BC Quartet, Alejandro Ziegler Cuarteto, Maxi Larrea Trio, Maldito Tango, and Los Tangueros Del Oeste.

“Lovely contrapuntal melodies and kaleidoscopic harmonic explorations… gorgeous music that brings to mind the serene aesthetic of ECM records” - Chicago Reader
Charles has produced or contributed to more than 50 albums, working with labels Serein Records, Ropeadope, 482 Music, Front Forty Press, and a host of independent music houses. He licenses and composes bespoke music for various media, and works as a contracted mixing engineer who brings an insider ear to the sessions. Charles manages Caverns Records as a hub for his own music, a small label to cultivate and catalog new visions of instrumental music with no stylistic restriction.
