The San Luis Obispo County Jazz Federation will present the award winning bassist and composer Marcus Shelby and his Quartet for a special program titled “Homecoming: Blues and the Pursuit of Freedom” on Saturday November 11 at 7:30 pm at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church in SLO. The San Francisco and New York based quintet will present original compositions and arrangements, music by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Charles Mingus, poetry, movement, and oratory. Shelby, a proud alumnus of Cal Poly class of 1990, began his professional career in San Luis Obispo during his senior year. Since then, he has recorded 11 albums, appeared in several films, sits on the San Francisco Arts Commission (10 years), and is the current artistic director for Healdsburg Jazz.
The show starts at 7:30 (with doors opening at 7:00). Tickets are priced at $30 for general admission, $20 for Jazz Federation members and $10 for students and can be purchased at https://www.my805tix.com/e/ or at the door. Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church is located at 1701 Fredericks Street in SLO.
